Search for electron antineutrino interactions with the Borexino Counting Test Facility at Gran Sasso

چکیده
Electron antineutrino interactions above the inverse beta decay energy of protons (Eν̄e >1.8 MeV) were looked for with the Borexino Counting Test Facility (CTF). One candidate event survived after rejection of background, which included muon-induced neutrons and random coincidences. An upper limit on the solar ν̄e flux, assumed having the B solar neutrino energy spectrum, of 1.1×10 cm s (90% C.L.) was set with a 7.8 ton × year exposure. This upper limit corresponds to a solar neutrino transition probability, νe → ν̄e, of 0.02 (90% C.L.). Predictions for antineutrino detection with Borexino, including geoneutrinos, are discussed on the basis of background measurements performed with the CTF.

متن کاملStatus of Borexino experiment and Physics results with its Counting Test Facility (CTF)
Borexino is a solar neutrino experiment located under the Gran Sasso mountain in Italy. It is currently in the commissioning phase and will start taking data in 2007. Its main goal is to detect low-energy neutrinos coming from the sun in real-time, via the scattering reaction ν e − → ν e−. Borexino exploits 300 tons of liquid scintillator as active target for neutrinos and 2200 photomultiplier ...
متن کاملThe photomultiplier tube testing facility for the Borexino experiment at LNGS
A facility to test the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for the solar neutrino detector Borexino was built at the Gran Sasso laboratory. Using the facility 2200 PMTs with optimal characteristics were selected from the 2350 delivered from the manufacturer. The details of the hardware used are presented. r 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
متن کاملBorexino: a Real Time Liquid Scintillator Detector for Low Energy Solar Neutrino Study
Borexino is a large unsegmented calorimeter featuring 300 tons of liquid scintillator, contained in a 8.5 meter nylon vessel, viewed by 2200 PMTs. The main goal of Borexino is the study, in real time, of low energy solar neutrinos, and in particular, the monoenergetic neutrinos coming from Be, which is one of the missing links on the solar neutrino problem. The achievement of high radiopurity l...
